Justice Altamas Kabir - New Chief Justice of India

As per information obtained from official sources, Justice Altamas Kabir will be the new Chief Justice of India and he will assume the charge on 29th September 2012. He will become the 39th Chief Justice of India.

Incumbent Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia will relinquish office on 28th September 2012.

Born on July 19, 1948 in Kolkata, West Bengal, Justice Kabir did his LLB and MA from the University of Calcutta.

He became an advocate in 1973 and practiced civil and criminal law in Kolkata at the district court and the Calcutta High Court. On 6th August 1990 he was made a permanent judge of Calcutta High Court.

Later on Justice Kabir assumed the office of acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on January 11, 2005.

He was elevated as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on March 1, 2005 and became a judge of the Supreme Court of India on September 9, 2005.

He will become the 39th Chief Justice of India on September 29, 2012. He is due to retire on 19 July 2013.
