Mysore Dasara is the Nadahabba (state-festival) of the state of Karnataka. It is a ten day festival with the the last day being Vijayadashami, the most auspicious day of Dasara. The festival is also known as Navratri.
According to the legend, Vijayadashami emphasises victory of truth over evil and was the day when the Hindu Goddess Chamundeshwari killed the demon Mahishasura, from whose name; the name Mysore has been derived.
The city of Mysore has a long tradition of celebrating the Dasara festival where the grand celebrations attract a large audience including foreigners.
The Mysore Dasara festival completed 400th anniversary in the year 2010.
In 2012, the Mysore Dasara festival is being held from 16th October to 24th October 2012.

Jamboo Savari :
Jamboo Savari is the special highlight of the Mysore Dasara Celebrations taking place on Dusshera day. In 2012, Jamboo Savari will take place on Vijayadasami October 24 (Wednesday). Goddess Chamundeshwari on Golden Howda atop Elephant will bless devotees in Mysore.
Nandidhwaja Puja will start after the Mysore Dasara Procession which will take place tentatively between 1.46 pm to 2.14 pm IST.
Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar will inaugurate the Jamboo Savari. Chief Guests include Deputy CM’s KS Eswarappa, R Asshok, Mysore Royal Scion Srikantadatta Narasimharaaja Wodeyar.
Torch Light Parade:
Torch Light Parade is another special highlight of the Mysore Dasara Celebrations taking place on the evening of the Dusshera day. In 2012, the Torch Light Parade will be held on October 24 (Wednesday) at 7 pm IST. Karnataka Governor HR Bharadwaj will witness the parade.
Mysore Palace Lighting :
The main attraction of the ten day Mysore Dasara festival is the Mysore Palace which is illuminated daily with nearly 1 lakh bulbs from 7 pm to 10 pm on all days of the festival.
