The fourth day of Diwali which falls on the 1st tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month (Kartak Sud Ekam) is celebrated as Gujarati New Year. The day is also known as Bestu Varsha or Nutan Varsha or Padva, and the day marks the start of the Gujarati Vikram Sanvat Calendar.
In 2014, the Gujarati New Year Day will be celebrated on 24th October 2014 and will mark the start of Gujarati Vikram Samvat 2071.
The day is also celebrated as Bali Pratipada and Givardhan Puja.
Bestu Varas Celebrations :
Tradtional customs and rituals performed on Bestu Varas day to welcome the New Year include dressing up with new colourful clothes and visit temples with flowers and eating mithais. Most of the Gujaratis indulge in heavy eating this. People also perform puja on this day.
People also start new venture or business activity on this day.
