Bhogali Bihu is a harvest festival celebrated in Assam that marks the end of harvesting season.
Also known as Magh Bihu or Maghar Domahi, this Assamese festival marks the end of harvesting season in the month of Maagha (January–February).
Magh Bihu coincides with Makar Sankranti which is celebrated in other parts of the world.
During this festival, Assamese people lit huge bonfires and the festival is also marked by feasts. Young people erect makeshift huts, known as meji, from bamboo, leaves and thatch, in which they eat the food prepared for the feast, and then burn the huts the next morning.
The day prior to Magh Bihu is known as Uruka which is celebrated on 13 January.
The three main types of Bihu are -
- Rongali Bihu (or Bohag Bihu) celebrated in the month of April (in the Assamese month of Bohag).
- Kongali Bihu (or Kati Bihu) celebrated in middle of October (in the Assamese month of Kati).
- Bhogali Bihu (or Magh Bihu) celebrated in the month of January (in the Assamese month of Magh).
